 Field: 'Publisher location'
In all citation guides I know, the following information is included: - Author - Title - optional: Editor - optional: edition # - Publisher location (city/cities, not country) - Publisher - Publication date As far as I have noticed, there are are no specific fields for 'Editor' and 'publisher location' included in BookCAT. Of course one could use custom fields but it wouldn't be really handy switching to the custom tab only for this purpose. Questions: - How do you (yes, all you BookCAT users) handle 'Editor' and 'publisher location' information? - Fredrik, would it be possible to add such fields on the general tab:
- with 'Editor' linked to 'person' lookup table - with 'Publisher location' linked to a new 'city' lookup table - Or did I simply miss finding this information in BookCAT? Regards, Werner

Ciao Werner Fortunately it's probably the latter you wrote ! :D Hope I didn't misunderstand what you need and sorry in advance if it's like that... Anyway, I'm using the actual fields and store only the Publisher's name and then fill in the relevant data ( city-address-Web-etc..) You can store the Publisher's imformation directly in the table: if you right click the field then you can edit all publishers. ( choose "edit" ) You can do the same from Lookup > Edit Table > PublisherPlease notice that you can view all data stored in the "Publisher" field ( as in all other fields..) by simply right-clicking and choosing Explore... When the new Explorer module will be implemented you will also use F11 like in CATraxx and CATVids. The Editor is instead in the Author Roles drop-down list, at right of the Author's name: Name .....................Role ------------------------------ Author 1.................. Author 2.................. Editor Author 3..................Contributor The Editor's name is already linked to the Person's table...but would you need a proper "city" field only for Publishers ? If yes, why if I can ask ? How about storing as "Publisher/City" instead than using 2 fields ? Hope this helps & take care !

Ciao Mario, with internet connection now working, testing is going on. I hoped for having missed something, so let's analyze your proposal OK, I found that you can place addition information in the lookup table. But how to integrate this info into a book report? A quite common citation style is like follows: [ID] Author: Title. [Editor.] [Edition #.] Publisher Cities: Publisher, YearSo how can you get e.g. Publisher.Address into a book report? My understanding is that for a book report only the fields from the book table are offered. OK. Once again an issue with reports. The Author and Editor are then shown linked together with a '&' and not like in my example above. Let's make a real example: [Hop-80] Hopkins, Tom: How to master the art of selling. Scottsdale, Ariz.: Champion Press, 1980So you can see that 'Publisher' (Champion Press) and 'City' (Scottsdale, Ariz.) have to be handled differently. I could imagine storing the 'cities' info in the field 'publisher address' - if it's possible to include that into a book report layout (like the one above)! Thanks for your input and maybe you have some additional ideas ... Take care, Werner

Correct. Use the Editor field instead of Author in the report. Since BookCAT doesn't (currently) have a publisher location field, I suggest you use either one of the custom fields, or rename one of the other "standard" fields you are not using.

OK, works when using 'main author' and 'editor' ... with 1 drawback: author and editor are now shown formatted as 'firstname lastname' and not as 'lastname, firstname' as with the general 'author' field. Or did I just not find the possibility formatting these fields on reports as 'last, first'? OK, I could imagine using the 'printed by' field for this purpose. I don't like the idea of switching to the custom tab for this one field ...

Hey, my last statement was right! I now found out how to arrange this (check box 'sort by' in report field properties!) -> Works as I would like it. Regards, Werner

Ciao Werner ! I noticed that Fredrik already answered your questions... The only suggestion I could add if you like to store data that you want to print about Publishers, Editors, etc...is to build a BookCAT separate database with those information. Your main Books database would have only the "simple" information and the "Address" database could be full of printable data instead ... In practice you could simply build a "Address Book" database with all possible data for anything you need, from Friends to Book Publishers, from Music Labels to Web Sites.. An alternative is to use a separate program for that ( I personally use a lot Lotus Organizer ) and store there all the data you are interested in.. I understand it would be nice having everything in the same database but it's not actually possible to print Address Data like City, Country, Zip, Telephone numbers, etc... or eventually...How about my first suggestion ? Do you think it could work adding City/Country directly in the Publisher field ? I mean into each Publisher field like this : Champion Press-Scottsdale(Ariz)-USA instead than Champion Press Mondadori-Milano-Italy instead than MondadoriKruger & Spell-???-Germany instead than Kruger & SpellKagge Forlag-Oslo-Norway instead than Kagge ForlagBerkley Books-???-USA instead than Berkley Booksor maybe only Champion Press-Scottsdale(Ariz) instead than Champion PressMondadori-Milano instead than MondadoriKruger & Spell-??? instead than Kruger & SpellKagge Forlag-Oslo instead than Kagge ForlagBerkley Books-??? instead than Berkley BooksYou could print the info and also filter/sort/search for Publishers' Cities and Countries... Hope this helps ( a little...) & take care ! :D

 Is this the city/state answer?
I'm a new user, but I had the same question as Werner. I currently plan on using the Country field to store publisher location data since country is generally not part of traditional bibliographic information. Therefore, I'll rename country to Publisher City/State and format it like "New York, NY" and "London, England". However, like mdb175, I found where it was possible to add the address information directly into the publisher table. However, I could not find a way to use that data in a report. Isn't there a way to access that data for reports instead of using a custom or unused field (e.g. Country)? It would seem ever so much cleaner that way. Rob

Re: Is this the city/state answer?
Ciao Rob, you cannot use that information because it is not actually available for reports, searches, filters, etc... Fredrik told that it will hopefully available in a future version when CAT's will support FULL hyperlinks. Hope this helps & have a nice day

Re: Is this the city/state answer?
Actually, by "full hyperlinking" I meant the ability to search (or link) on all fields in the explorer (including fields in lookup tables), not that you could include this information in reports (however, that is also on the "list").
