but what is the data server?
And what is it used for?

are there specs to it? the only mention I have seen is to hook it through delphi in a control .. and I am doing that through odbc and php now ... so what does the dataserver gain me over odbc?

You can access the database directly through whatever tool you want. The dataserver gives some db access, as well as some other, CATraxx specific functionality.
