Re: What's a Good Disk Catalog Tool
Yes definitely some deficiencies and a they threw in a few quirks as well. However for the last few years it has suited my needs while I watched the CAT programs evolve. I only have about a 1,000 records in MyStuff so far so I have not encountered any problems. However, using a customized BookCAT could certainly be a better long term solution. Should you try BookCAT, please share your ideas. Hmmmm so a: Book = Asset, Contents = receipts, documents, and repair records, Chapters = line items in a repair record or sections in a users guide... There are certainly some possibilities....and lots of custom fields. David

Re: What's a Good Disk Catalog Tool
I'll definitely post whatever I can figure out, especially since I'll be asking questions about how to force-fit my ideas into inventory control. You've already given me some new ideas right here, with the contents and chapters usage that I hadn't thought about much. I have a lot of old junk so some kind of repair record is something I should really do. Also I need to keep better records for extended warranties for the newer stuff. Lately I've been buying more and more of those warranties as it becomes apparent that the repair/replacement costs for items like flat-panel LCD TVs are always higher than the original purchase price. Like I have a lot of time for this stuff. Well, here goes,

Ed,
Sorry it took a while to see your post. Just got back yesterday from a month in Iraq. As requested, attached is Mario’s template. I also included in the zip file a conversion of that template into BookCAT v7. I don’t think I’ve messed with it much other than to convert, but I might have toyed with a thing or two; really don’t remember. Mario’s template may be a bit rudimentary, and given its age obviously based on an older version of BookCAT, but may still prove helpful in generating ideas. Hope it helps.
If you come up with something usable, I’d love to see it, as I too am interested in a good home inventory manager and don’t have anything yet, nor the time to play around much in BookCAT. I picked up Quicken’s stand-alone Home Inventory Manager (for free as part of a package), but it wasn’t particularly good. Part of our collective dissatisfaction with other solutions could be that we’re all so spoiled by the excellence of Fredrik’s programs. Good luck!
All the best,
Bob

Hi Bob, Thanks so much for the file. I've taken the liberty of quoting your private message to me in this forum, because I thought it would be of general interest; I particularly agree with your last comment! My present need is for an inventory for my art collection, mostly works on paper (prints, paintings, photographs) but also some small sculptures, pottery, and fabric pieces. I started work on this last month, and now Mario's template has given me additional ideas. I will post if and when I have something to share. Thanks again, and best wishes. Ed

File sent via email. And thanks for the heads-up about pm being turned off. I wasn't aware it was off, since it was on before the board software was updated and I assumed it remained so. It's back on now. Bob

No problem at all, Ed. Since we can now post attachments in the forum, I decided why not just upload the files for the benefit of any others who might be interested - but alas, there is a 512 kb size limit, which after zipping even the smallest of the two files slightly exceeded. If anyone else is interested in the files, please post or pm me and I'll email them to you. Total size for the two files zipped is <1.2 Mb. Bob

I've increased the file size limit to 4MB.

 Re: Re:
Thanks Fredrik! Given that eased restriction, here now are the files (Mario original and converted to BookCAT v7) for all who are interested. Fredrik, does seeing this interest in a good home inventory (or even generic inventory) cataloging app give you any inclination to perhaps provide one in the vein of your other excellent products (he asked oh so hopefully)? Surely it wouldn't be too significant an effort to produce a variant of an existing app for this purpose. People would line up for miles to buy it. Ok, maybe that's a slight exaggeration. But as alluded to by another user in a recent post, you really do "own" the cataloging database world!! Bob

 Re: Re:
I'll choose to be encouraged by that response. And there is another, previously unmentioned benefit to producing this program - it would even out your icon stack!!
