 Add data from online Databases
Hi
I was wondering if it could be possible to add a new feature to Sofcat, I love almost everything about this software but I think it lacks the posibility to add new entries by downloading the data and images from online databases like Amazon... that way almost all of the info gets entered automatically and we just have to edit whatever we need to.

Yeah, good idea!
there are many online databases:
http://www.softpedia.com/
http://www.programurl.com/search.php
http://shareme.com
it is unfair that CATraxx and BookCAT and CATVids can download that infos :(
Can you look at such possibility?

Re: Add data from online Databases
I concur. I'm trialing the software right now and am very impressed with BookCAT, CATraxx, and CATVids. I've been looking at some of the competition as well, and most competitors don't have software cataloging modules, so FNPrg has a head start already.
I do, however, greatly miss the querying capability of the other applications. Mediaman is one application that does have this ability. It downloads the information from Amazon, including a CD image. Unfortunately, Mediaman has severe limitations otherwise. But if it can do this SoftCAT should be able to, as well.
Interestingly, there has been only one response to this old post, and no reply from Fredrik. Fredrik, is there a chance of seeing this in the near future? This is the only thing right now holding me back from buying all four applications.

Thank you for the quick reply, Fredrik, and for your honesty. An active forum with a participating developer is always a positive sign.
As you might expect, though, I am disappointed. Can you tell me why you are so much against this? Is it difficult to do, or is SoftCAT just a low priority?
I am a moderator of the PowerTools Software mailing list, whose purpose is to find software for power users. I posted asking for suggestions on cataloging software, and someone asked why I don't just use ListPro. Well, a dedicated application can look nicer and be a little easier to use, but for me, the Internet download capability is what makes them worth paying for. Yes SoftCAT will find software that is already installed and fill in some relevant information, but not anywhere near as much as I can get for my books, music, and movies using the other programs in combination with the Internet. It doesn't gain me a lot over just using ListPro, Access, or SQL.
Of course, you need to make business decisions based on your overall plan and goals and I can't tell you how best to do that, but I would think that this would be a good way to add significant value to SoftCAT, just as you have done with your other products.

Amazon only sells a fraction of software available today. And the available info is very limited.
