Post Change Sort Order of Lookup Tables?

Hi all!

I am trying to change the sort order of some lookup tables so that the drop down menus will show the order I would prefer. E.g., the "Binding" field presently has the types of bindings available to select in alphabetical order, ascending. I want to change the order so that the bindings I have are at the top of the list. That way I can make my selection from one of the top types and not have to run down the drop down menu to find and click the ones I use the most.

My Binding lookup table has several items I have added and naturally the bindings I use most are scattered through the middle and bottom of the drop down. There are a lot of other lookup tables where I would like to change the sort order also, if it is possible. (Beside BookCAT I have SoftCAT, CATraxx, and CATvids).

To manually sort any tables I would want to add a column for a sort number and then arrange them as desired. There is an "ID" field in each lookup table (like "Binding ID" for example) that would be perfect but that doesn’t seem to be editable. Since the ID numbers are assigned internally they must be used for something else. Is it possible to add a "sort column" in the lookup tables for manual sorting?

Another way I could get around this is to edit the binding names (or any lookup table names for that matter) and add numbers or letters in front of each so that the alpha sort would work but I didn't want to do that unless there is no other way to do it. (Like: 1-Hardcover, 2-Softcover, 3-Trade Paperback, etc.)

I appreciate any advice you folks can offer!

Thank you.

Jim

Simply use the "Sort by" field. Note that this will also affect the sort order when you sort on the Binding field, for example in the Book View.

Thanks Fredrik!

Duh! I didn't even consider just changing that field! I guess I have seen it auto-generated long enough that I forgot all about it.

Regarding sorts by the Binding field I don’t use that for sorting, but I do pay attention to the field.

Thank you for the fast and very helpful reply - and the screen shot!
