Ciao Fredrik,
this morning I was talking about barcodes with a friend of mine here using CATraxx and we have to ask this:

Could it be possible adding a checking feature in the barcode number field ?
Sometimes it can be entered wrong and we cannot know it 'til we don't match the titles using the "Find by Barcode" searching...
It would be good to prevent typing errors for future purposes: I have less problems as I already use scanners, but people who enter them manually can have troubles in a future when maybe will own a scanner and search...
Probably it has been asked before but I'm not sure and I was not able to find the thread...maybe it was instead requested about ISBN's in BookCAT....don't remember..sorry...
I think it could be helpful in all CATs.

Thanks in advance & take care

First of all, I have no idea how to check if a bar code number is correct. And, isn't it better to simply scan the bar code directly into the Bar Code field instead of manually typing it?

Ciao Fredrik
Quote:
First of all, I have no idea how to check if a bar code number is correct.

Ooopps...sorry !
I thought you did know about that as you implemented the ISBN's checking..!
If you need I can mail you notes about Ean codes.
I don't know about UPC's but I think they work the same.
Quote:
And, isn't it better to simply scan the bar code directly into the Bar Code field instead of manually typing it?

Well, if one has the scanner ( just like me ) there's no problem, but if one doesn't actually own it but plans to use it in the future, he can be sure that he's entering correct numbers even manually and he won't have future troubles...
I think about that related to the use of a scanner anyway, also in the future: if one does not need it, the barcode field is in practice unuseful as it's the longest field and there are many other fields to use to locate the correct items.
But if one plan to use it, it changes...

Fredrik, no problem if you think it's not to be implemented !

Take care.
Hi Mario,

barcode checking is not so complicate. And "how to check" is easy to find, if needed.

But i see another problem. Catraxx does'nt know which type of barcode it have to check. The field is not fixed on EAN/UPC, so you are free to use any barcode you want. (even if it is a self developed one or a barcode without check digit)

So, if you want Catraxx to check the barcode on validity, the field must be reduced on types of barcode based on the same check procedure.

greetings
neth

Ciao neth
Quote:
So, if you want Catraxx to check the barcode on validity, the field must be reduced on types of barcode based on the same check procedure.

The program I use at work ( running Prologue ) uses a single field to store many kind of barcodes, but it's a professional tool built for selling barcoded products.
I contacted the developers to have some more information about but I'm afraid that this won't be that useful in CATs..
Probably it does not worth the pain to spend time on and Fredrik already has a long list of requests to evaluate that are probably more urgent than this one...
Maybe if it was an easy thing....

Well, no problem: I asked

Thanks again & have a great weekend !
