Post Re: Online backup storage applications

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the update! I plan to sign up as well. I like Backblaze's simple approach, their commitment to unlimited storage, and the fact that they are completely open about how their servers are built and maintained. It should work fine for my needs although the initial transfer could take a loooong time. I'll let you know how it goes for me.

@ GAstorino
Thanks for the suggestion. I do use portable drives as local backup and will continue to do so as a first line of defense should I ever need to restore. The downside is that the portable drive backup can get somewhat out of date if I fail to run it every day. So my setup is have the backup drive connected all the time and automatically backup to it. That of course means that storing the drive off-site from my home does not work so I really want the kind of protection a cloud based service can provide. Sadly, portable drives do fail. One of mine failed recently with zero warning. Fortunately it was a backup drive and my primary was fine. Going forward I want to have the security that my data is stored in three places, the primary drive, a backup drive, and a cloud based service. It may sound excessive, but in this digital age I've accumulated some irreplaceable photos, videos, music recordings and other data that I want to securely protect without having to think about it.

It's getting close to the time when my Mozy service will expire. BackBlaze still seems very promising.

Ken/Dave how has your experience been?

Excellent. But, I've never had to restore from the backup there. Nevertheless my confidence in them is high.

Like Dave I've never had to do a critical restore. I have periodically tried partial test restores and each one has performed faultlessly. The transition of my account from an old PC to my current PC and the corresponding change of identity etc was simple and effective. I still have a warm feeling for BackBlaze.

Just checked out the Backblaze site and it looks really good. Especially at $4.00 a month and their understanding that many users, like me, haven't a clue how this stuff works! Thanks for sharing guys! :)
